Dani Kouyaté est né en 1961 à Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) dans une famille de griots. Après avoir obtenu la Licence de Cinéma à l'Institut Africain d'Education Cinématographique de Ouagadougou, il se rend à Paris où il obtient une Maîtrise d'Animation Culturelle et Sociale à La Sorbonne, et un Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies en Esthétique du Cinéma à l'Université Paris 8, Vincennes Saint-Denis. Il est aussi Diplômé de l'Ecole Internationale d'Anthropologie de Paris. Après avoir vécu plusieurs années en France, il s'est installé en Suède depuis 2007.
De 1990 à 1996 Dani fait une tournée en Europe et en Amérique avec le spectacle famillial "La Voix du Griot" créé par son père Sotigui Kouyaté.
Il débute sa carrière cinématographique en 1989 avec le court métrage "Bilakoro", qu'il co-réalise avec Sékou Traoré et Issa Traoré de Brahima. En 1992 il fonde la société "Sahélis Productions" avec ces deux mêmes amis, renforcés par deux autres amis réalisateurs : Abdoulaye Dao et Lacina Ouédraogo. Il réalise trois courts métrages avant de réaliser en 1995 son premier long métrage "Kéita! L'Héritage du Griot". "Kéita!" reçoit le prix de la meilleure première oeuvre au Festival Panafricain du Cinéma et de la Télévision de Ouagadougou (Fespaco), ainsi que le Grand Prix Cannes Junior au Festival de Cannes 1995.
En 1999 il réalise plusieurs épisodes de la série télé burkinabé "A nous la vie", puis s'attaque en 2000 à son deuxième long métrage "Sia, le rêve du python". "Sia" joue simultanément sur plusieurs tableaux. C'est un film visuel, fascinant avec une histoire captivante encrée dans le passé mythique de l'Afrique. Mais c'est aussi une allégorie politique moderne, universelle et intemporelle sur les rapports entre pouvoir, mythes et folie. Le film nous dit que les événements du passé influent continuellement et de façon pernicieuse sur le monde d'aujourd'hui. Sotigui Kouyaté le père de Dani tient dans ce film le rôle complexe du Chef des Armées "Wakhané Sakho".
En 2005 il réalise "OuagaSaga", une comédie urbaine avec des adolescents de Ouagadougou. En 2013 il co-réalise "Soleils" avec Olivier Delahaye, un "road movie" philosophique qui traite de la sagesse des traditions africaines et de l'histoire complexe des relations entre l'Afrique et l'Europe. Son premier film suédois "Tant qu'on vit" sort en 2015. Ce film traite de la question identitaire dans notre monde globalisé.
Son nouveau film "Katanga – La danse des scorpions" qui sera sur les écrans à partir de février 2025 est une adaptation africaine de "La Tragédie de Macbeth" de Shakespeare.
Dani est aussi enseignant à l'Université d'Uppsala au département d'Anthropologie Culturelle et d'Ethnologie et au "Wiks Folkhögskola" à Uppsala, au département de cinéma et de théâtre.
